U.S. Army Invests in Floating Solar Panels

Just west of Fayetteville, North Carolina, is Fort Bragg, a large army base populated by nearly 40,000 individuals (soon to be renamed Fort Liberty). Near that military base is a managed bass lake called Big Muddy. And on that lake is a large floating solar system. In collaboration with other entities, Fort Bragg owns and operates this floating panel array, which generates 1.1 megawatts of electricity! Instead of clearing an estimated seven acres of land for ground-mounted solar panels, Fort Bragg used 2 acres of water surface to generate the same amount of electricity.

Authorities indicate that this is the largest floating solar array in the Southeast United States, providing energy through sustainable resources. Along with this project, the U.S. Army recently announced a commitment to be carbon free by 2030, planning to add self-sustainable microgrid projects on every army installation by 2040.

If the U.S. Army believes in the power of solar panels for generating electricity, you can too! Solaron is happy to consult with you regarding rooftop solar panels for your home or business. To find out more, call us or ask for a free consultation using our online form.
