Summer Pool Cooling

Bright pink inflatable pool float in the shape of a flamingo, floating on the surface of a clear, blue swimming pool with sunlight reflecting off the water.

Dual Purpose Panels

Solar pool heating panels offer a popular method for extending swimming seasons by raising water temperatures. But can these same panels work in reverse to cool a pool during hot summer months? Let’s explore the possibilities and limitations.

How Solar Pool Heating Panels Work

Solar pool heating panels work by circulating pool water through a network of tubes exposed to sunlight. As water moves through the tubes, heat from the sun increases the temperature before the water returns to the pool. Because the system relies on the sun’s radiant heat to warm the water, it is of great benefit during cooler seasons or on mild days when the water temperature is naturally a “little too cold to swim.”

To cool a pool, solar panels need to work in reverse by releasing heat rather than collecting it. Heat loss occurs naturally when cold air surrounds the panels, causing the water to cool as it flows through the system. So, just as circulating water through the panels during the hottest part of the day increases water temperature, running water through the panels after sunset or early in the morning when ambient temperatures have dropped decreases water temperature.

Cooling Your Pool with Heliocol Panels

When using a solar pool heating system for the purpose of cooling water, think about your environment. Cooling works more efficiently in dry, arid environments where the air temperature drops significantly at night. If you live in an area where nighttime temperatures remain high or humidity levels are high, your cooling results are limited. To maximize your results, follow these practical steps:

By following these suggestions, you control your pool temperatures and can enjoy your pool in the hottest of months!
