Overview of BBB Ratings
The bureau’s rating system is based on the information that they obtain about a business, including customer complaints and interactions. Ratings range from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). The BBB also maintains profiles on such businesses that explain the most significant factors to affect their given ratings. Rating elements include the following:
- Complaint History
- Type of business
- Time in business
- Transparent business practices
- Failure to honor commitments to BBB
- Licensing and government actions known to BBB
- Advertising issues known to BBB
Using such elements, the BBB scores a business on a 100-point scale. Points are earned or deducted in each element of the rating system. These elements include:
- Complaint volume
- Complaint resolution
- Failure to honor mediation/arbitration
- Competency licensing
- Government action
- Advertising review
- BBB trademark infringement
After tallying up all point earnings and deductions, a business earns a point score. That point score determines the ratings grade. A score of 97 to 100 points earns an A+ rating.
