If you’re considering solar pool heating, you may have heard that the solar collectors need to face south. That can sound like bad news if the best open section of your roof faces east or west.
Fortunately, solar pool heating is more flexible than many homeowners realize. A south-facing roof can be an excellent location for solar pool collectors, but it isn’t the only option. Before deciding solar pool heating won’t work because of your roof’s direction, consider other factors that can make your home a good candidate.
Is South Best for Solar Pool Heating?
In the Northern Hemisphere, south-facing solar collectors generally receive strong sun exposure throughout the day. This makes a southern roof an ideal location for a solar pool heating system. But ideal and necessary are two different things.
Solar pool heaters work by circulating pool water through collectors that are warmed by the sun. The more useful sunlight those collectors receive, the more opportunity they have to transfer heat into your pool water.
That means the goal isn’t simply to find a south-facing roof. The installer needs to find a location with good sun exposure and enough space for the collector area your pool requires.
Can Solar Pool Heaters Face East or West?
The simple answer is yes. East- and west-facing solar pool heating systems can work well, especially when the roof gets plenty of direct sunlight.
An east-facing roof gets more direct sun earlier in the day, while a west-facing roof gets more in the afternoon. Although either orientation may receive less overall solar energy than an ideal south-facing installation, that doesn’t automatically make it a poor location.
Other conditions can make an east- or west-facing roof the better choice. For example, imagine the south-facing side of your home is heavily shaded by mature trees, while the west-facing roof gets hours of unobstructed afternoon sun. Putting collectors on the shaded southern roof just because it faces south may not make sense.
Available roof space matters too. A smaller south-facing section might not have enough room for the desired collector area, while a larger east- or west-facing section could provide plenty of usable space.
Roof Pitch and Shade Matter Too
Direction gets a lot of attention, but the angle of the collectors also affects how much sunlight reaches them. Fortunately, solar pool heating collectors are often installed directly on the existing roof. Your installer can evaluate the combination of roof direction and pitch to determine how well a particular area is likely to perform.
Shade is another important consideration. Trees, neighboring homes, chimneys, roof sections, and other objects can block sunlight at different times of day. Even a well-oriented roof may not be the best choice if it spends several hours in the shade. That is why evaluating the actual property is more useful than relying on a simple rule about roof orientation.
Collector Area Makes a Difference
The amount of space available for solar collectors is another piece of the puzzle. Solar pool heating systems need enough collector area to provide useful heating for the pool. The appropriate amount depends on factors such as pool size, desired swimming season, climate, roof conditions, and sun exposure.
When collectors cannot be installed at the most favorable orientation, the system design may sometimes compensate with additional collector area, provided enough suitable roof space is available.
This is also why two neighboring homes with similar pools may need different solar pool heating layouts. One may have a large, sunny south-facing roof, while another gets better results using a larger section of an east- or west-facing roof. The most effective solar pool heating system design depends on the property.
Finding the Best Solar Collector Location
You don’t need a perfectly south-facing roof to find out whether solar pool heating will work for your home. What matters is how roof direction, pitch, shade, available collector area, and your pool’s heating needs work together.
