Winter Pool Inspection Tips

A person holds a pool test strip and a container with a color-coded chart in front of a sparkling blue swimming pool. The test strip is being compared to the chart, likely to assess water quality parameters such as pH and chlorine levels.

As a dedicated and responsible pool owner, you make it a practice to winterize your pool and Heliocol solar system in order to protect your investment and provide a quick re-opening in the Spring months. Regular inspections of your pool and equipment ensure everything stays in optimal condition during the colder months. This article will provide some key recommendations to keep your pool in check.

Winter Pool Maintenance

Your winter closing routine included cleaning and balancing the water chemistry prior to covering as well as clearing all the water lines. Here are some areas to inspect during the winter months to keep your pool in good condition.

Cover Inspection

Examine the pool cover for rips, debris accumulation, and proper tension. Adjust or replace as needed to prevent sagging or water pooling.

Water Levels

Check water levels to ensure there is not a dramatic rise or fall, which could indicate leaks in your pool or overfilling from rain.

Pump and Filter System

Winterizing your pool included clearing water from the plumbing lines and equipment so as to avoid freezing damage that is often costly to repair. Inspect the pump and filter system for freeze damage. Verify all valves remain in the correct position for winter settings.

Chemical Balance

Test the water chemistry once a month to ensure it remains balanced. Even in winter, proper pH and chlorine levels prevent corrosion, scaling, staining, and algae growth. If you need to add chemicals, use them sparingly especially if you are not running the pump to circulate the water. Some chemicals that are not circulated properly may harm your pool surfaces. Ask about safe winter chemicals at your local pool supply store.

Regular inspections of your pool take little time, but it is time well spent. Hopefully, your inspections don’t uncover any surprises but if they do, addressing issues quickly keeps you from having to deal with greater challenges when re-opening your pool.

Now that you know what how to maintain your pool through the winter, what about your valuable Heliocol Solar Pool System? Keep an eye out for part 2 of this series coming soon!
