In recent posts, we’ve covered innovative ideas for photovoltaic panels, such as amorphous silicon and perovskite cells. The primary advantage to these thin-film technologies is that they can bend extensively without breaking. However, both technologies are still in developmental stages, and do not offer the price points needed to compare with today’s products.
Nevertheless, SunPower was quick to see the benefits of solar panels that were flexible. Imagine bringing a powerful solar panel with you when camping, or in emergency situations. You could also attach them to motorhomes, travel trailers and boats, no matter whether they had flat roofs or curves! So, years ago and without hesitation, SunPower began developing their own panels that could bend “on demand.” Using their Maxeon development base, SunPower offers flexible silicon-based solar panels.
These panels are merely 2 millimeters thick and bend up to 30 degrees. Their power generation efficiency is 25% – as good as standard Maxeon solar panels! They come in 3 different sizes and capacities, depending on your needs, and weigh from 2.5 to 6.5 pounds. These smaller panels do not require mounts or heavy hardware, and they easily fit in the back of a camper or SUV. Of course, you will need a regulator to use these panels, in accordance with instructions.
If you see the need for solar panels when away from home, why not consider them for when you’re home too! That’s one of the ways Solaron is here for you. Feel free to contact us with any of your questions. We’re happy to answer them over the phone or through email. While you’re at it, schedule a free solar analysis for your home using our online form.
